A Patriotic Brew: How Bright and Early Coffee Supported the War Effort in WWII
At Bright and Early Coffee, our story has always been deeply rooted in Texas pride, family tradition, and a commitment to quality. But one of the most inspiring chapters in our 100+ year history took place during World War II, when we stepped up to support the American war effort in a very practical — and flavorful — way.
When Metal Was Needed for Victory
During the early 1940s, as the United States poured everything into winning World War II, metal became one of the most critical resources in the country. Tin, steel, and other metals were essential for producing **munitions, weapons, tanks, ships, and aircraft**. The government launched widespread conservation programs, restricting the use of metal for civilian packaging so that every available ounce could go toward the fight overseas.
Like many American manufacturers at the time, the Duncan Coffee Company (makers of Bright and Early Coffee) answered the call.
Switching from Metal Cans to Glass Jars
We made the decision to **stop producing coffee in metal cans** and transition to **glass jars** instead. This change allowed us to continue delivering fresh roasted coffee to families across Texas and beyond while freeing up valuable metal for the war effort.
- Glass jars preserved the quality and freshness of our coffee.
- The switch helped conserve metal resources needed for munitions and weaponry.
- It was a small but meaningful contribution from a Houston-based, family-owned business doing its part on the home front.
This wasn’t just a temporary packaging change — it was a symbol of the “everyone pitches in” spirit that defined the Greatest Generation. American families continued to enjoy their morning cup of Bright and Early while knowing their favorite coffee was helping support the troops.
A Legacy of Resilience and Innovation
Even during wartime shortages and rationing, we kept our roasters running and our standards high. The switch to glass packaging showed the adaptability that has defined Bright and Early for generations — from our founding in 1918 by Herschel M. Duncan all the way to today as a fifth-generation family business.
Many of those vintage glass jars from the WWII era have become collectible pieces of American history, reminders of a time when everyday companies and everyday products played a role in something much bigger.
Honoring Our Past While Roasting for the Future
Today, we continue that same dedication to quality and community. While we’ve returned to modern, sustainable packaging, the spirit of that WWII-era sacrifice still inspires how we do business:
- **Roasting fresh six days a week** in Texas
- **True roast-to-order** with 1–2 day freshness
- **Supporting local partners** like Bering’s Hardware
- Delivering the same bold, flavorful coffee that Texans have trusted for over a century
Whether you’re enjoying a bag of our classic **1918 Blend**, one of our popular flavored coffees, or a convenient box of K-Cups, you’re part of a legacy that values hard work, patriotism, and great taste.
**Thank you** to all the veterans, families, and home-front heroes of WWII — and to every customer who has been part of the Bright and Early story.
